April Brings Meg Pierce to the Weir Farm Artist in Residence Program

Evelyn McCorristin Peters April 20, 2017

Pattern, symmetrical design, and grids are the organizing principles in my work.

Through working in painting, drawing, and collage, I have always been interested in fine variations color and line, especially found in textiles. Lace, handkerchiefs, thread, and women's stories are my inspirations. I use stitching, fabric, lace, string, pins, and layers of paint as metaphors for interior life. Woven year by year, levels of experience and feeling become our center. This intricacy often remains hidden, discovered only upon careful observation.

The stitching, safety pins, seams, embellishments and vintage fabric also have

particularly historical feminine meaning. These older materials possess an innate beauty and also carry an important echo of their makers. Recently I have been using vintage handkerchiefs both with simple white work and some with floral patterns.

I spent February 2012 at Weir. I was inspired by the spare monochromatic landscape and used my photography and mixed media with lace to create a successful group of winter mandalas. I am excited use the handkerchiefs and other fiber elements and perhaps photography to form a base for more colorful interpretations of another season at Weir.
