ARTIST STATEMENT – OBSERVATION DISTILLED

“I work at an intersection of drawing and printmaking. Everything - internal and external - is fodder. Like solving a puzzle, filtering concept, aesthetic, craft and intuition is both seductive and absorbing. Images unfold as a series of visual essays – responses to the observed world, which at any time is stunning, raw, tragic, breathtaking and renewable.

Since early childhood I have been drawn to flying. Floating shapes, layered light and macro perspectives are recurring elements in my work. Learning to pilot small aircraft deepened this connection – low altitude flight became physical immersion in light and space shaping the visual language of my work.”

ABOUT NANCY CUSACK

Nancy is Professor Emerita at The Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston, where she taught until the onset of the pandemic. Formally trained in studio art and psychology, Nancy deeply enjoyed teaching across graduate and undergraduate programs for many years. Residencies and sabbaticals brought her often to Mexico, Costa Rica, Cuba and Western Europe, with Mexico having a profound impact on her practice. There she co founded a studio program through MassArt in Oaxaca and Puebla. Over her career Nancy has curated, organized and juried numerous exhibitions, developed special travel programs and lectured extensively.

Extended time in Latin America allowed her to develop lo-tech, non-toxic printmaking techniques, often in humid, unpredictable conditions. In 2020 she relocated to Sarasota, just as the pandemic brought the world to a halt. Spring 2022 she opened her downtown studio, continuing a practice rooted in observation, adaptation and light.

Among the places Nancy has exhibited are the Albuquerque Museum, NM; Loft Latin Art Space, Havana, Cuba; Washington Printmakers, DC; National Gallery of Costa Rica; Holter Museum, Helena MT; Gallery Kayafas, Boston; Marietta Cobb Museum, GA; ARC Gallery, Chicago; Bergkerk Gallery, Amersfoort, Netherlands.
